Record Highs Remain in Play

MARKET SUMMARY

U.S. markets traded in a tighter range on Friday while pushing record highs and fresh resistance despite worries over a government shutdown. The Russell 2000 showed the most strength after rising 1.3% but failed the 1,600 level and its all-time high by 7 points. However, the close north of 1,597 and 0.3% weekly pop represented the third-straight week of gains and 8th record closing high of 2018.

The Nasdaq advanced 0.6% after closing at a record high of 7,336 to extend its weekly win streak to 3-straight. The index closed higher for the fifth time in six weeks after rising 1%

The Dow climbed 0.2% while holding the 26,000 level but fell shy of its lifetime high of 26,153 set the prior session by 82 points. The S&P 500 rose 0.4% to finish at a fresh record close and all-time high of 2,810. Both indexes also clinched their third-straight weekly advance and have traded higher in 8 of the past 9 weeks.

Dow Holds Its High Level

MARKET SUMMARY

U.S. markets took a breather on Thursday as the major indexes closed in negative territory on less volatility and ahead of January option expiration tomorrow. The event could cause a return of volatility to slightly elevated levels along with the results of a couple of major blue-chip companies earnings that were reported after today’s close.

The Dow slipped 0.4% but managed to trade to a fresh all-time high of 26,153 before pulling back while holding the 26,000 level for the second-straight session. The S&P 500 dipped 0.2% after making a run to 2,805 but failed a fresh record high by two points.

The Nasdaq dropped 0.02% after failing its all-time high by 17 points while closing back below the 7,300 level. The Russell 2000 kissed 1,586 on the open but failed to take out Wednesday’s peak and resistance at 1,600 after sliding 0.6%.

Bulls Regain Momentum

MARKET SUMMARY

U.S. markets showed opening momentum at the start of Wednesday’s trading and were able to hold positive territory while pushing fresh all-time highs and round number resistance. The action was certainly calmer than the previous session with volatility settling back down.

The Dow showed the most strength after rallying 1.3% to an intraday record high of 26,130 while clearing and holding the 26,000 level into the closing bell.

The Nasdaq rose 1% after trading past 7,300 to 7,309 while setting just below this level and falling shy of its all-time high by 21 points.

The S&P 500 gained 0.9% after making a run to 2,807 and another lifetime high while ending the session above the 2,800 level. The Russell 2000 added 0.8% after testing a high of 1,589 but struggled with resistance at 1,600 following Tuesday’s 4-point trip past this level.

Join me this Thursday when I introduce a NEW kind of trading.

Opening Sizzle Fizzles Into Closing Bell

MARKET SUMMARY

U.S. markets continued their parabolic run to start 2018 with record round numbers tripping on today’s surge to higher highs. However, the opening surge fizzled as the major indexes gave all of their gains to close the session in negative territory.

The Dow slipped 0.04% after peaking at 26,086 but failed to hold the 26,000 level. The S&P 500 slipped 0.4% after clearing 2,800 but a level that also failed to hold.

The Nasdaq lost 0.5% after tapping a record high of 7,330 while closing lower for just the 2nd time in the past 10 sessions. The Russell 2000 tumbled 1.2% after tapping a lifetime high of 1,604 and showed the most volatility.
